説明 | Clapham Common Underground Station (Northern Line), 1 May 2023. The station was opened by the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) in June 1900 as the terminus of an extension southwards of the C&SLR’s Moorgate Street – Stockwell line. The original station was designed by the C&SLR’s Architect T P Figgis but in preparation of the C&SLR being extended southwards to Morden (opened in 1926), the surface level station was rebuilt in 1923-24 to plans by the Consultant Architect of the Underground Electric Railways of London (the holding company for the C&SLR), Charles Holden, though in much the same form as the original.Somewhat surprisingly, the very narrow island platform serving both northbound and southbound services remained, the only other Underground station retaining such a station is the next one north of Clapham Common, Clapham North. It is a Grade II listed building. Pictured from the stairs is the very narrow island platform; note how close the yellow warning lines are to the edge of the platform. It can't be much fun for waiting passengers in the rush hour when a Northern Line train screeches inches from their nose. I don't envy the train driver either! |
