説明 | Built in 1890-1895, this Chicago School-style skyscraper was designed by John Root and Charles B. Atwood for William Ellery Hale to serve as a commercial office building to replace the earlier First National Bank Building, which was originally built in 1868-1869 and was restored after the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, and had been purchased by Hale in 1880, whom set about modifying the building in 1883. The present building began construction in 1890 with the foundation, basement, and ground floor, with the previous building being jacked up on pilings to allow tenants to remain in place until their lease terms were finished. The ground floor became home to the Carson Pirie Scott and Company store upon its completion, with the upper section of the building being completed in 1895. The building, as an example of the First Chicago School of Architecture, represents the departure from the earlier load-bearing masonry exterior wall construction that had previously dominated commercial construction, and towards a steel frame structure construction with an exterior curtain wall. The building, as a result, consists of a steel frame structure, with an exterior curtain wall of terra cotta and windows. The building features decorative trim at the multiple Chicago Windows and stands fourteen stories tall, with decorative terra cotta reliefs at the spandrels, decorative pilasters framing the window bays, and a brownstone-clad base with decorative metal trim, featuring punched storefront openings, and the top featuring a wide overhanging cornice with decorative trim. Early on, the building was popular with merchants and professionals, whom had offices and retail shops in the building. However, by the 1930s, the aging building was struggling to attract tenants, and around this time went through a series of renovations that removed the bottom level of each oriel window, as well as the removal of the cornice. In 1948, the ground floor was renovated heavily with a modern facade to accommodate the Karoll’s Men’s Shop. Despite the alterations, the building managed to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, as well as being designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. In 1995, the building was designated a Chicago Landmark, and is a contributing structure in the Loop Retail Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The building was rehabilitated between 1994 and 1999, restoring the exterior facade and remaining historic interior features, and modernizing the building’s systems and interior configuration for adaptive reuse, finding new life as the Hotel Burnham, now the Staypineapple, An Iconic Hotel, The Loop. |
