説明Built in 1908, this Beaux Arts-style building was designed by Barnett, Haynes and Barnett, and is also known as MacLean Center, or the Illinois Athletic Club Building. The building was built to house the Illinois Athletic Club, and stands 18 stories and 254 feet (77 meters) tall, originally being 12 stories tall prior to an addition of six additional stories atop the building in 1984 in the Postmodern style, utilizing similar elements to the older facade below, which was designed by Swann and Weiskopf. The building housed the Illinois Athletic Club until 1984, when declining membership and financial issues caused the club to cease operations. The building was subsequently sold and renovated, before being sold to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992. The building’s original principal eastern facade is clad in limestone with heavy base featuring many reveals, three arched entrance bays in the middle, two smaller bays on the north and south ends of the facade, quoins at the edges of the facade above the first floor, with three two-story arched window bays in the center of the facade at the second and third floors, which feature windows with decorative trim, broken pediments, and sculptures, with large corbels serving as keystones above each arch, two smaller window bays at the north and south ends of the second floor of the facade, featuring decorative pedimented hoods, and two elliptical oxeye windows with decorative sculptural relief trim with floral motifs flanking the keystone above each window. The fourth through tenth floors feature relatively simple window openings, with Chicago windows in the central bays and one-over-one double-hung windows on either side, with decorative sills featuring corbels, a large sculptural relief on the architrave at the front facade of the 11th floor, with decorative trim below and a cornice with dentils and modillions above, and a parapet at the top with pilasters and three central circular oxeye windows. Inside, the historic section features a historic ballroom with green Vermont marble columns and gilded ionic capitals, a balcony with curved railings, a large staircase with a circular balustrade and arcing flights of marble steps, decorative pilasters with sculptural reliefs, a coffered ceiling, and crystal chandeliers, which is located behind the tall arched windows on the second and third floors of the building. The addition above copies the section of the facade between the fourth and tenth floors, with arched bays at the window bays on the top floor, and a cornice at the top of the facade. The building is a contributing structure in the Historic Michigan Boulevard District, listed as a Chicago Landmark in 2002, and is part of the campus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, being previously known as Wolberg Hall, but today being known as MacLean Center.
