説明Built in 1925, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Vitzthum and Burns for the Bell and Zoller Coal Company, and was initially known as the Bell Building, until 1956, when it was sold to the Old Republic Life Insurance Company, after which it became known as the Old Republic Building. The building stands 24 stories and 325 feet (99 meters) tall, and is clad in white terra cotta with granite cladding around the base of the facade. The bottom three floors of the building feature fluted ionic pilasters, decorative terra cotta relief panels on the spandrels between the second and third floor windows, an arched three-story entrance bay on the Michigan Avenue facade, which contains a brass and glass curtain wall and is flanked by two brass seals and flagpoles, above which are three cartouches and festoons, Chicago windows with metal spandrels on the second floor, plate glass storefronts on the first floor, and a band of belt coursing at the spandrel between the third and fourth floor windows. The fourth floor features decorative reliefs flanking the window bays, with a cornice featuring modillions at the spandrel between the fourth and fifth floors, with the fifth through nineteenth floors repeating the same rhythm of windows and decorative recessed spandrels in the central bays and unadorned pairs of windows in the bays at the edges of the south, north, and west facades. At the twentieth floor, the windows are flanked with reliefs much like those at the fifth floor, with the row of windows at this floor being sandwiched between extruded belt coursing below and a simple cornice above. The twenty-first and twenty-second floors feature a two-story colonnade with engaged corinthian fluted columns and dark spandrel panels, flanked by corinthian pilasters at either and and windows on the twenty-first floors with decorative surrounds, above which is a cornice, and the twenty-third floor, which features decorative reliefs and cartouches flanking the windows, and a large cornice at the building’s roofline, which features modillions and acroterions, above which is the 24th floor penthouse, setback from the facades below, which houses the Skyline Club, an upscale private club restaurant featuring a historic Georgian English Pub interior that was relocated to the building at the time of its construction, which is surrounded by a rooftop terrace. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2010, and today houses office space, retail spaces on the ground floor, and a private club restaurant in the penthouse.
