説明Evergreen Commons, 262 Georgia Street at Prospect Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2019. Though it has since been pressed into reuse as a complex of twelve apartments, administrative offices, clinics, and event space associated with Evergreen Health Services, it's obvious that the original use of the building was as a church, and its contrasting styles speak to the change in architectural tastes between the first and second phases of its construction. The earlier portion of the building (far left, background) dates to 1868 and exemplifies the Romanesque Revival style with its round-arched windows, stout corner tower, and raking arcaded corbel table carved into the vergeboard under the eaves of its four-sided tent roof. The much grander 1881 addition (center, foreground) is a work of architect Franklin W. Caulkins that displays the traits of Gothic Revivalism with its pointed arches, stepped buttresses, large windows, and much more pronounced vertical orientation. The Ninth Street Baptist Church, as it was first known, was founded in 1867 as a Sunday school operated by the Washington Street Baptist Church and intended to minister to the residents of the rapidly developing section of the city now known as the West Village. Originally headquartered in a multiuse building at the corner of Niagara and Virginia Streets, classes moved to the present location upon the completion of the first portion of this structure, and it became a full-fledged church in June of the following year. After the renaming of Ninth Street in 1871, the church followed suit and took on the name of Prospect Avenue Baptist Church, which it retained until its disbanding in 2012, at which point it was the oldest continually operating Baptist congregation in Buffalo and had a largely Hispanic membership. Evergreen Health has owned the building ever since.
