説明Built in 1960-1963, this Modern International-style high-rise residential tower was designed by Bertrand Goldberg, and is known as the Astor Building, and stands 28 stories tall. The building was built as a luxury hotel featuring all-suite accommodations, which was known as the Astor Tower Hotel, and housed a restaurant in the basement known as Maxim’s de Paris, which featured an ornate interior with many Art Nouveau elements, which was operated by Nancy Goldberg, Bertrand Goldberg’s wife, until it closed in 1982. The building was utilized as a hotel until 1979, when it was converted into a residential condominium. The building’s exterior expresses its concrete structure, with a circulation core that is exposed up to the fifth floor, concrete columns that form pilotis at the base, creating a tall, open portico at the base of the tower, and the concrete floor plates are visible on the exterior, dividing the facade of the building into a grid, framing the storefronts that make up most of the building’s exterior cladding. At the base, the building features two soaring cantilevered canopies with lots of light fixtures, which serve as entrances to the condominiums and the basement restaurant space, and the top of the building is crowned with a tall, slender penthouse. The building was renovated in 1996, removing the original louvered shutters from the exterior, and in 2000, the restaurant was sold by the Goldberg family to the city of Chicago, and served as the Nancy Goldberg International Center, a public community center and event venue, until 2022, when it was sold by the city back into private ownership, and now serves as the private and exclusive Astor Club. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Gold Coast Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
