He was later 'adopted' by a doctor named Cairncross who took him to live at his home on the mainland. Jimmy enlisted under his adoptive name of Cairncross in May 1917 and named his cousin Margaret Rollands (Brown), also known as Granny Mibuas, his next of kin. After training at Enoggera, left for active service on board the troopship 'Miltiades' in August with the 10th Reinforcements for the 47th Infantry Battalion. Jimmy was later assigned to the 25th Battalion and joined his unit when they were in reserve at Kortepyp, Belgium. Jimmy was severely wounded during an action in August 1918 at Vauvillers, east of Amiens and was evacuated to hospital in London. In January 1919 he was repatriated home where he returned to his life in Queensland, settling at Sandgate where he established himself as a fisherman. Later he moved to North Arm, on the Sunshine Coast where he resided until his death in 1945. Personal blog story: James Cairncross. |
