| 説明 | A visit to the Short Brothers aircraft factory tunnels in Rochester, organised for Subterranea Britannica members in April 2023. Having lived near the tunnels for 5 years, I had not managed to gain access, nor book a visit. I think at this stage it's important to say that there are so many opportunities to legitimately visit the tunnels these days, breaking and entering shouldn't be an option; please stop!The tunnels extend to approximately 3 miles in length and are a combination of air raid shelters for the above ground workers, with underground manufacturing facilities and secure storage. Construction was achieved by tunneling through the Kent chalk, and the tunnels are in the most lined with engineering bricks. Known for their superior strength and damp resistance, but higher cost, they have resulted in a long lasting tunnel complex. There is a short section of tunnel that has been concrete lined, and much of the complex has vertical brock walls and curved corrugated iron roofing.There are a few original features remaining, including some contemporary grafitti and evidence of the engineering work that was once conducted in the tunnels. The images are in no particular order, but roughly organised thematically. It wasn't possible to use a tripod for much of the tour, so excuse the high ISO images and torchlight. There were 11 others on the tour and wandering torches couldn't be helped. |
