| 説明 | Church of St James the Great, Antony Cornwall, stands above the village close to Antony House, ancestral home of the Carew Pole family, (now a popular National Trust property) who built a chapel of Ease at nearby Maryfield . The village of Antony, or Antone, was mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday Survey where the manor was reportedly held by Ermenhald from Tavistock Abbey. Over time the village has had various names including Antony-in-East, Antony St Jacob and East Antony as well as Antony-by-Rame. The present building consists of an aisled nave, chancel between north & south chapels, north & south porches & west tower . It was completely reconstructed in 1259 and mainly rebuilt again in the early 15c with the nave aisles being added at that time by Margery 1420 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/upu43770L1 1st wife of Sir Thomas Arundell - Margery was one of 4 heiress daughters of Warrin Erchedeken who was heiress to Antony - according to Pevsner her image is the ‘most spectacular in Cornwall’ - A notice in the porch describes the removal of the screen and choir stalls as having freed up a ‘fine open space where the Church School children can give expression to worship in mime and drama’. ( !!! ) The tower is curiously ‘D’ shaped with a staircase turret at one corner, which not only puts the windows off-centre but obscures the fine clock. The largely reconstructed 1425 tower still contains some Norman work in its lower stages The c1600 north porch has a well carved wagon roof and in the chancel, a 13c single sedilla and piscina surviveThere are Carew family memorials from 1555 to 1835 , one to Richard Carew, author of Survey of Cornwall.
