説明 | Late 2nd/early 3rd Century AD.Polychrome stone tesserae, limestones and vitreous paste.Found in Rome in 1876, in the Esquilino district, near the auditorium of Maecenas.Capitoline Museums, Antiquarium, AC 4984.This mosaic, enclosed by a frame featuring black and white notches, depicts an episode narrated by Euripides in "Iphigenia in Tauris": the fortuitous meeting between Orestes and his sister Iphigenia at the Temple of Artemis. The scene was identified thanks to the numerous representations of Euripides' tragedy in both paintings and ceramics . On the left is Orestes, naked and almost with his back to us, with a cloak over his left shoulder. Opposite, is his sister Iphigenia , dressed as a priestess and holding a stauette in her hand. |
