説明Date: February 28, 1921Source Type: PhotographPublisher, Printer, Photographer: Underwood & UnderwoodPostmark: Not ApplicableCollection: Steven R. ShookRemark: Westbound New York Central passenger train No. 151 plowed through the third coach of eastbound Michigan Central train No. 20, at an interlocked crossing of these lines at Porter, Indiana. Thirty-seven persons were killed and four seriously injured in this wreck.A detailed review of this train disaster is available on the Porter County's Past blog. This photograph was taken on February 28, 1921, one day after the wreck and is believed to have been taken by a news distribution service. Pasted on the reverse of this photograph is the following press information:"PORTER, INDIANA, TRAINWRECK KILLS 42NEWS ITEM: THE New York Central Interstate Limited out of Chicago, crashed into a Michigan Central train out of Chicago, at the Junction near Porter, Indiana, causing the loss of 42 lives.#10537CH [this photograph's number?] is a good view of the exact spot where the wreck occured [sic]. In the foreground can be seen the New York Central Limited engine which plowed through the Michigan Central train. This photo was taken at 10:00 Monday morning when the wreckage was well taken away."This photograph was taken facing west, with the photographer most likely standing in the second story of the switch tower located at the intersection of the tracks of Michigan Central Railroad and New York Central Railroad. The Michigan Central tracks are those running from the wrecking crane toward the bottom right of this photograph, while the wrecking crane's train is standing on the New York Central tracks. Present day Wagner Road, which crosses both tracks, would be directly behind the photographer.Three chimneys are visible above the house at the upper right in this photograph. These chimneys are part of the Chicago Hydraulic Pressed Brick Company's production facility at Porter.Copyright 2012. Some rights reserved.
