説明 | Built in 1880, these Italianate-style rowhouses were built at a time when the West End of Cincinnati was a thriving community, sitting among a dense cluster of residential and commercial development in the neighborhood. The rowhouses each are three bays wide and three stories tall, with arched two-over-two windows, decorative trim, recessed entryways with arched stone trim surrounds, stone front porches, cast iron railings, oxeye windows on the side facades, rear ells, and bracketed cornices. The rowhouses were abandoned and heavily dilapidated by the late 1980s, each being rehabilitated as two apartment units in 1988 under the direction of Hub + Weber Architects, as part of the revitalization of the surviving Betts-Longworth Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The rowhouses today serve as apartments, being a beautiful surviving remnant of the neighborhood, which suffered a disproportionate impact from 20th Century urban renewal efforts, owing to its majority-Black population, which city leaders and businesses wanted to move further from downtown due to their racist attitudes, and historic Victorian buildings, which were seen as outdated. |
