説明 | Church of St Mary, Black Torrington Devon, lies close to the banks of the River Torridge. Built of roughly squared sandstone rubble walls with granite dressings, it consists of a nave, south aisle and chapel, north transept, three stage crenellated west tower with granite west doorway and south porch. There was a church here in Norman times, the earliest record of a rector here is Henry Fitzwarren instituted in March 1278. (The Fitzwarrens were related to the Zouche family who were Lords of the Manor and Roger la Zouche was patron of the living at that time). The earliest surviving fabric is in the 14c north transept. However much of the present building dates mainly from 15c & 16c when the south aisle was added. The octagonal C15 granite font also survives www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/8t08fEM9E8By 1902 the building had become dilapidated and its thorough restoration from 1902 - 3 entailed a partial rebuilding under the direction of Rev. Medley Fulford and architect Lucius Reichel. The work involved a restoration of the nave roof, part rebuild of the south wall, re-laying of the floor and re-seating.Picture with thanks - copyright www.blacktorrington.org.uk/gallery/ |
