ShookRemark: The Russell Sage was a 230-foot long package freighter constructed by the Union Dry Dock Company in 1881 at Buffalo, New York. The ship had a beam of 32 feet 6 inches. three decks, coal-fired boilers, and a steeple compound engine of 550 horsepower. The ship entered service in June 1881 under the ownership of J. P. Cottrell with a home port of Toledo, Ohio. It was sold in 1890 to the Lake Erie Transportation Company and its home port moved to Monroe, Michigan. Frank S. Upton became the ship's owner in 1906 and he converted the bulk freighter for the lumber trade. This ship sold again in 1907 to George C. Bayliss and its home port moved to Ogdensburg, New York. On November 2, 1912, at Oswego, New York, the ship burned and was abandoned by insurance underwriters as a total loss. In 1917, the ship was sold to The Barge Ireland Company and converted to a barge and renamed Atlasco. In 1919, the barge was sold to Sincennes-McNaughton Line of Montreal, Canada. It foundered on August 17, 1921, near South Bay Point 30 miles west of Kingston, Ontario, with a cargo of coal after springing a leak; no lives were lost.It appears from this postcard image that the Russell Sage is unloading logs onto the ship canal dock at Indiana Harbor, Indiana.Source:Great Lake Vessel History: The Vessel Histories of Sterling BerryCopyright 2023.
