説明 | This is not a colour photo. As with some others appearing here, it was hand painted by my grandmother, who did this as a 'cottage industry' at home until colour film took over in about 1951. People sent their favourite photos from all over Liverpool, such was her reputation. When you look at the colouring of the dress in this one, you wonder how she did it - especially as she was missing three fingers of one hand (a result of the shipwreck that orphaned her).I remember her telling me in the late 50's that she took 3 months to finish colouring this photo, and that she worked with the actual dress alongside her. For this reason I feel that securing this picture electronically is to honour her labour of love properly at long last.For the family record my grandmother was of unknown origin - pulled from a shipwreck as a small baby in the River Thames that killed hundreds, and her parents were never identified. She herself was killed when she was hit by a train in Wallasey in 1963. |
