説明 | Corio Villa 56 Eastern Beach Road. This beautiful villa house overlooking Corio Bay in Geelong is of great historical significance but not because of its beauty. It was made in the foundry of Charles D Young and Co in Edinburgh Scotland in 1855. It was then shipped to Geelong as a flat pack house to be erected on site in Geelong. The cast iron veranda, the veranda posts and the ornamentation on the gables is superb. Young and Co foundry burnt down soon after the prefabricated house was sent to Victoria and so Corio Villa may be the only known example from this foundry still standing. The house was imported by a land commissioner William Gray but he died before it arrived. Alfred Douglas the owner of the Geelong newspaper and a wool merchant bought the house and had it erected without any plans or Allen keys. More weatherboard extensions in keeping with the original were added in the 1890s. This private house sold a few years ago for over $5 million. |
