| 説明 | Indian Pond Heron at the Nathsagar Reservoir at the Jayakwadi Dam near Paithan- pic 5 of 9: Although crustaceans are a normal part of their diet, he crab was proving a tough nut to crack for this little Indian Pond Heron. The feeding habitat of these birds is usually marshy wetlands. They usually feed at the edge of ponds (like this fellow here) but they also known to mke extensive use of floating vegetation such as water hyacinth to access deeper waters. Indian Pond Herons may also on occasion swim on water or fish from the air and land in deeper waters. They have also been observed to fly and capture species of fish which leap out of the water. Indian Pond Herons are clever birds and are known to at times even fly low over water to drive frogs and fish towards the shore before settling along the shoreline to feed on them. They have been noted to pick up crumbs of bread and drop them on the water surface as bait for fish. (Paithan, near Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Dec. 2022) |
