| 説明 | Built in 1926, this Beaux Arts-style structure was designed by William H. Creaser of Donaldson and Meier to serve as the Bird House or Aviary for the Detroit Zoo. The building served as an aviary for the Detroit Zoo until 1975, when a semi-circular greenhouse wing was built to the rear (west) of the structure to house the aviary. Since that time, the original wing, an iconic part of the zoo’s original design, has been adapted for other uses. The building features a layout in the shape of a greek cross with an octagonal rotunda at the center that is topped with a glass and steel dome, with three rectilinear wings coming out of three sides of the rotunda and a semi-circular glass wing in the rear that houses the butterfly and bird exhibits inside two separate greenhouses. The exterior is clad in red brick and stucco, with quoins and decorative brickwork and trim panels, an entry porch with a vaulted roof at the main entrance, with tile cladding on the vault and on the blind arch above the front door, and six-over-one double-hung windows. The building is one of the most prominent at the zoo and today houses galleries, office space, with bird and butterfly exhibits in the rear wing. |
