| 説明 | Mapusa Friday market pic 3 of 27: A stall in the Mapusa Friday market with a huge haul of dried fish, anchovies and shrimp for sale. I did not encounter dried fish on sale anywhere else in Goa apart from this Mapusa Friday market. It has always been fresh fish in Goa, but I was getting addicted to an accompaniment to many meals called Kismur, which is a dried shrimp salad. The Mapusa Market has always been one of the main centres for trading and shopping in Goa since ages. In fact, some even believe that the market soon became so significant, that the town of Mapusa itself grew to a substantial size due to the volumes of commerce at the market. Derived from the Konkani words map (to measure) and sa (to fill), these words put together form the word Mapusa- that measuring and filling is what is done in a market anyway. Ingenious!
