説明 | Built in 1899, this Romanesque Revival-style building was built to house a Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) serving the city of Newark, Ohio. The building features a red brick facade along the streets with buff brick on the rear and side facades that do not directly face adjacent streets, a band of buff brick on the two principal facades that was once hidden behind a cornice that was removed during the 20th Century, one-over-one windows, arched window bays with pilasters, stone belt coursing and brick banding, an entry door with an arched transom and brick surround on the Church Street facade, retail shopfronts on the first floor, a heavily weathered corinthian stone column at the corner of 3rd and Church with a chamfered storefront behind it, a central entry door with an arched transom on the 3rd Street facade with paired stone corinthian engaged columns to either side of the doorway, medallions, carved detailing, and the letters “YMCA” carved above the arch, and a roof parapet withs stepped sections. The building presently houses several retail tenants on the first floor, and is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. |
