説明 | Built in 2015-18, this postmodern interpretation of the Gothic Revival-style architecture of the surrounding campus was constructed at the expense of two significant historic houses that once stood at the rear of the building, which were unceremoniously demolished to make way for the building, completely violating the historic preservation ordinances that are supposed to protect the historic resources in the Fort Sanders Historic District, which clearly do not matter if there is a lot of money and a large institution involved, a prevalent issue when a large institution such as a university or hospital is located next to a historic neighborhood, especially the case if that neighborhood happens to have a transient student population or a population that suffers from higher than average rates of poverty, as the surrounding community in these cases often lacks the resources or ability to resist institutional encroachment. The building features a red brick exterior, Gothic Revival elements that tie it into the surrounding campus, buttresses, gothic arches, aluminum storefronts, and a tiered massing. The building houses classrooms and laboratories for the university’s science department. |
