説明Built between 1930 and 1934, this Collegiate Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Barber and McMurry and named for James D. Hoskins, the 14th President of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville between 1934 and 1946, in 1950, and houses the main library for the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, standing on the site of the W. W. Woodruff House, which the university had purchased in 1925. The building was initially built in two phases, with the east wing being constructed in 1930-31, and a tower added between 1932 and 1934, with two additions being added to the west side of the building in 1957-59 and 1966. The building features a red brick exterior, with the original wing featuring buttresses, gothic arched windows with limestone trim and tracery, an entrance from Cumberland Avenue with a limestone surround, limestone spandrel panels, and a tower with a crenellated parapet, corner turret, limestone base, and a second story front oriel window. The additions on the west side of the building feature simpler Gothic Revival details including gothic arches, with red brick and limestone tying them into the adjacent original building. The building no longer serves as the main library for the University of Tennessee at Knoxville following the construction of the larger John C. Hodges Library in 1969 and the new library’s expansion in 1984-87 to its present size.
