Now only 2 of them remain, upon one of which is the effigies of a knight and his lady with their armories, and other noble families, their allies, richly gilded, whereon the Courtenays, Grandisons, Wellingtons, Whalshborowes did not long since appear. On the other was a proportion, completely armed, lying crosslegged, after the manner of such, as in elder ages went to war as in the Holy Land, but none of them have any inscription left to testify who they were."In 1821 antiquarian draughtsman Charles Alfred Stoddard made a detailed drawing of the effigiesHaving no heirs, it looks like Umberleigh descended possibly to his younger brother Sir Reginald Willington 1355 & thence via another brother Sir Henry Willington of Gittisham 1322 & his son Sir Henry Willington of Gittisham 1349 (husband of Isabel Whalesborow +++ ) to his son Sir John Willington "of Umberleigh" 1378 husband of Matilda daughter of Sir Walter Carminow & their son John Willington "of Willington Court & Umberleigh" dsp 1396 (The Beaumonts inherited Gittisham estate in 1453 from the Willington family, holding it for 200 years ) +++ One source says this couple may be a candidate for the tomb - Church of St Mary, Atherington DevonPicture with thanks - copyright Ian www.cornishchurches.com/Atherington%20Church%20Devon%20-%...
