説明During a series of observing runs at one of the the Keck 10m telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, I was allowed into the mirror laboratory where the hexagonal mirror segments were cleaned and re-coated.Using a Hasselblad with the 30mm FishEye lens in 1997, I was able to photograph segments at different stages of the process. This image catches me reflected in the corner of one of them with its fresh aluminium coat.Working with Marshall Cohen (Caltech) and in collaboration with Sperello di Serego Alighieri (ST-ECF/ESO), Andrea Cimatti (ESO) and Joel Vernet (ESO), we were using spectro-polarimetry to identify and study the scattered light from the obscured quasars in the nuclei of distant radio galaxies. This produced a unique set of data showing that regions of gas and dust in the host galaxies acted as a mirror to provide a view of the central supermassive black hole. The reflected light revealed itself by its linear polarisation very much in the same way as a clear blue sky is highly polarised in a way that can easily be demonstrated using a pair of polarising sunglasses.
