説明 | Built in 1929, this Mediterranean Revival-style building was designed by Barber and McMurry to house the Downtown Knoxville branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), which continues to occupy the building. The building features a red flemish bond brick exterior, stone trim, a stone base, a hipped and gabled red tile roof, quoins, twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows with stone sills, with some windows featuring stone trim surrounds, diamond pane leaded glass casement windows in the central bay of the first floor on the south and east facades, which feature arched transoms, a stoop at the south entrance to the building with a small integrated juliet balcony, stone juliet balconies with faux machicolations and brackets at the end bays of the second floor of the south facade, a recessed porch at the center bays on the fourth floor of the south and east facades, cantilevered center bays on the end wings of the fourth floor on the east facade, which feature front gables, a two-story brick rear wing housing a gymnasium with corbeling at the roofline and oxeye clerestory windows, and a rear contemporary addition that matches the exterior materials on the rest of the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and continues to serve as a recreation center, with a residential condominium in the former hotel space inside the building’s main wing. |
