| 説明 | Norton Priory #1A couple of Sundays ago, I went with my wife, her daughter and Ted, the family Japanese Spitz dog to Norton Priory Museum & Gardens in Runcorn, Cheshire. This was once the site of a medieval church and is said to be the most excavated monastic site in Europe. I’ve previously posted photos of the beautiful 12th century undercroft with its beautiful, vaulted ceiling. The Priory was founded in 1134 and achieved mitred abbey status in 1391. The museum among the thousands of objects discovered at the site is the twice life-size St Christopher statue, which may have been commissioned to mark the site’s being awarded abbey status in 1391. The museum’s woodland walks are now open to the public and today’s posts are of part of the woodlands but include shots that I took in the museum of the St Christopher statue and of a Tudor period window. I also include two photos I took of a statue of a former monk – a gardener - in the woodland area. |
