説明 | Built in 1859, this Greek Revival-style building was constructed by Ephraim Clayton and George W. Shakelford to serve as a courthouse for Polk County, which was formed in 1855. The building features a cross-gable roof, two-story front portico with square columns and a front pediment, a large rooftop cupola with dentils at the eaves of the roof, pediments, arched vents, and a curved roof at the top with a large metal finial, brick doric pilasters on the corners and between window bays on the rear wing, six-over-six double-hung windows with granite lintels and sills, a simple cornice around the base of the roof, and a double front entrance door with a doric surround with pilasters and an architrave, sidelights, and a large transom. The surrounding square is home to various war memorials and monuments, with the largest being the World War I monument, sitting in the middle of Courthouse Square street at its intersection with Mills Street atop a large rustic stone base. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and continues to function as the main courthouse facility for Polk County, with several supplementary buildings scattered around it. |
