説明Dunedoo. Population 1,200.White pastoralists or squatters moved into the district in 1832. It took most squatters years to obtain official license and later freehold to their lands. But the town came much later after being surveyed in 1868. The town name comes from a Wiradjuri word meaning swans as many are often found on the Talbragar River which flows through the town. One of the first signs of a town developing is the opening of a Post Office. One opened here in 1876 called Bolaro. The state school opened in 1896. Although the town name was changed to Dunedoo in 1909 the main street is still Bolaro Street. In 1910 the railway reached the town and the old weatherboard railway station was built then. Dunedoo was on the Lithgow to Mudgee to Gulgong to Coonababran line. A spur line was built in 1920 from near Dunedoo (Craboon) to Coolah. The grain silos in the Dunedoo station yards were erected in 1936 and they are now adorned by a colourful silo art painting. The silos feature swans after whom the town was named as well as a local racing horse and jockey Hugh Bowman and a leading world race horse named Winx. The work was produced by artist Peter Mortimore. They are opposite the Royal Hotel built in Art Deco style similar and completed as the railway opened in 1910. Further along the main street is the Art Deco Dunedoo Hotel which opened in 1910 also to coincide with the railway opening. The main heritage listed building in the town is the interwar classical style Courthouse. Although court session began in 1912 this fine but petite Courthouse was designed by the government architect and built in 1927. It is in Digilah Street just behind the Dunedoo Hotel. A Union Church in the main street was built in 1906 to be used by the Presbyterians, Anglicans and Methodists. The first Catholic Church opened in 1912. There is now a modern Catholic Church (1971) and a two storey convent (1921) in Merrygoen St along with a Catholic School. Also in Merrygoen St. is the former Masonic Temple (now a pre-school) and the Anglican Church. The foundation stone of the Anglican Church on the corner of Merrygoen and Cobborah Streets opened in 1925. The Presbyterians built their own church near the Anglican in Cobborah Street also in 1923. The Methodists erected a fine timber framed church around 1908. It is now a residence. There is an antique shop and a craft shop in the town in the old Art Deco cinema built in 1937. The main attraction for visitors is the Dunedoo Museum in the old red brick Bank of New South Wales building built around 1930. The current Post Office was built in 1925 but postal services began in 1876 and the Jubilee Hall was built in 1953 is also in the main street.
