説明 | The Stillwater Mine is located in the Beartooth Mountains of southern Montana, USA. The mine targets platinum- and palladium-rich igneous rocks in the 2.71 billion year old Stillwater Complex. The target rocks are in a unit called the Johns-Manville Reef ("J-M Reef"), where Pt and Pd occur in pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, which are two types of "fool's gold". Most J-M Reef rocks are sulfidic anorthosites, but other lithologies also occur.Seen here is the mine's waste rock pile on the eastern side of the Stillwater River Valley.Locality: near the Stillwater Mine, Beartooth Mountains, southern Montana, USA |
