| 説明 | "This township safe was delivered new to our house, the house of my father, Ralph Thompson, who was clerk-treasurer of the Township of Barrie at that time. We aren’t exactly sure of the date but my brothers all seem to agree it was delivered in the early-to-mid 1950s. It was brought, as they remember, by an impressive group of strong fellows who cleverly jockeyed it up the steps and through the door. It seems I was already away from home at that time, possibly working at a summer job or beginning my studies at Teachers’ College. My brothers Douglas, Keith, and Wendall have produced these names of the sturdy fellows who brought it, as Jack Black, and Tom Neil. They also say that they remember Jerry Hillier being there, although he may still have been in school. If Miller Black was still driving the mail at that time, it was probably he who brought the safe from the station.My sister recalls that the township had presented the safe to my father one year instead of a salary increase. It was a boon to him as many days the house was empty while he was away working and my mother was away teaching. Mom taught ten years before her marriage and twenty-three years after marriage. Most of her years teaching after marriage were in communities quite far from home. She used to say that if you wanted to have all neighbours mad at you, just each their kids.Ralph worked for the township for forty-three years so it was a worry off her mind to finally have a safe place to keep the township books and records and for temporary storage of money for taxes, etc. There was no bank in Northbrook for most (or all of) those years so he always had to go to Tweed or Kingston."Ralph retired as clerk in 1976 and died in December 1977.
