説明 | This aircraft is the oldest surviving example of a Supermarine Spitfire out of more than 20,300 made. This iconic Spitfire Mk1 first flew on 21 April 1939 and was delivered to 72 Squadron RAF, at Church Fenton 6 days later, part of a batch of 310 ordered by the Air Ministry – the first of many. It continued in service until the summer of 1943 when it was withdrawn from use after an accident and never flew again. However it’s useful life continues to the present day. After the war it was put on temporary static display at several locations and it also featured (on the ground) in the 1952 film “Angels One Five”, and the 1969 film “Battle of Britain”. K9942 was again put on temporary display at many locations over several years and since 2002 has been carefully preserved at the RAF Museum at Cosford in the English Midlands, where this picture was taken. |
