説明Built between 1916 and 1919, Cheoah Dam impounds the Little Tennessee River just above where it joins the Cheoah River at Tapoco in Graham County, North Carolina. The first dam to be created for the Tapoco Project (Tallassee Power Company), the concrete arch dam was built to provide power to the operations of Alcoa's aluminum smelting and rolling mill in Alcoa, Tennessee, is 750 feet (229 meters) long, and stands 225 feet (69 meters) tall, making it the world's tallest overflow dam at the time of its completion, now eclipsed by newer and larger dams. At the time of its completion, the dam also featured the world's longest span of an electrical transmission line at 5,010 feet (1,530 meters) across the river below the dam, and the largest turbines of any hydroelectric facility in the world. The dam impounds Cheoah Lake, with a surface area of 644 acres (261 hectares), a surface elevation at full pool of 1,277 feet (389 meters), and a catchment area of 1,608 square miles (4,160 square kilometers. The dam, outbuildings, and powerhouse were all listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, owing to their historical significance to the region's economic development in the early 20th Century. The dam is presently jointly managed by the Brookfield Smoky Mountain Hydropower company and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
