ShookRemark: This school of the St. Paul Catholic Church of Valparaiso, Indiana, which was 90 feet by 50 feet in dimension, no longer exists. The school was built in 1867 on an acre of land purchased from T. A. E. Campbell at a cost of $9,000. Upon completion, the school opened with three teachers.In 1872, the Sisters of Providence from St. Mary of the Woods in Terre Haute, Indiana, would take responsibility for instruction at the school and the school's name changed to St. Paul's Academy and Boarding School. The Sisters of Providence from Notre Dame would later assume charge of instruction.The pupils visible in this image are standing along present day Chicago Street. The house to the right, which still stands [2022], faces present day Academy Street. Thus, the school was situated on the northwest corner of the intersection of Chicago Street and Academy Street.The house visible to the left in this image no longer stands and was replaced by a house that appears to have been constructed in the 1940s.St. Paul Catholic Church would have been immediately to the left of the photographer of this image.A new St. Paul Elementary School, constructed by the Roy C. Clark Construction Company of East Chicago, Indiana, at a cost of $235,000, opened on the same site in September 1951.
