説明Built in 1899, this Beaux Arts-style building was designed by Oliver Traphagen on land that formerly housed the office of Doctor Gerrit P. Judd (1803-1873). The first major building designed by Traphagen in Honolulu, the building features a painted brick exterior with terra cotta trim, quoins, decorative headers with corbels, replacement windows, banded reveals and arched windows on the fourth floor, a band of ornate terra cotta trim panels at the top of the fourth floor below the cornice that originally sat at the top of the building’s exterior walls prior to a fifth-story addition in the early 20th Century, which was altered with the addition of a glass storefront in 1979. The tallest office building in Honolulu at the time of its construction, the building had the first passenger elevator and mail chute in the city, as well as featuring the earliest known use of Terra Cotta as an exterior cladding material in Hawaii. The building’s first tenants included the C. Brewer & Company and Alexander & Baldwin Company, two of the “big five” companies that controlled much of Hawaii’s land and economy between the late 19th Century and the mid-20th Century. The building is a contributing structure in the Merchant Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
