説明 | Echinacea purpurea 7/2022 Coneflower G1- (US Native) Common Coneflower, Mature plant size: 36in., Purple, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed G1 for 25.3 YEARS (Seed). Planted in 1997.Missouri Botanical Garden: Echinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-hairy, herbaceous perennial that is native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods of the central to southeastern United States (Ohio to Michigan to Iowa south to Louisiana and Georgia). It typically grows to 2-4' tall. Showy daisy-like purple coneflowers (to 5" diameter) bloom throughout summer atop stiff stems clad with coarse, ovate to broad-lanceolate, dark green leaves. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones may be visited by goldfinches or other birds that feed on the seeds. Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinosin. meaning hedgehog in reference to the spiny center cone.I have grown many (~35 different varieties) of the new hybrid coneflowers without success. Several have made it through a winter or two, but most did not even survive one winter. I am in zone 6 (SE Michigan), but my winters are more like zone 5. Meanwhile, my common coneflowers continue to return year after year. Whatever the hybridizers did to "breed in" all the different colors and sizes drastically affected the winter hardiness. No more hybrids for me.Photo by F.D.Richards, SE Michigan.
