説明 | As seen from a Blue Islands’ ATR 72 – Herm, Channel Islands, 26 June 2022. Interestingly, the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to have been occupied by the Germans in WWII (1940-45).The Channel Islands are a vestige of the Duchy of Normandy from the time when the Duke was the English monarch and before mainland Normandy was taken by the French Crown (1066-1204). Divided into two completely separate and independent self-governing ‘Bailiwicks’ – Jersey and Guernsey (with the semi-autonomous Alderney and Sark) – each being a Crown Dependency (with the Queen being Head of State as the Duke [NOT Duchess] of Normandy – though she no longer uses that title legally) but not part of the UK. However, the Channel Islands are part of the legal definition of the British Islands - as distinct from the geographical term British Isles! Hardly confusing at all. They have never been part of the EU.Herm (population 60) is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The official languages are English, French and Guernesiais spoken only by a small minority. Just off the south coast is the islet of Jethou – with a population of 3! |
