説明 | Initially constructed in 1915-18 by Nakagawa Katsutaro, a Japanese master builder, this Buddhist temple was renovated heavily in 1929 under the direction of architect Hego Fuchino. The temple was heavily renovated in 1978 and saw a large addition in 1992, with these alterations respecting the original architecture and design of the building, maintaining its historic character. The temple features a steeply pitched hipped gable roof with a rounded front gable over the front steps, intricate wood carved ornament, flared eaves, decorative columns and beams, decorative statuary around the front entrance, and a lot of traditional Japanese features and motifs. To one side of the original structure is a wing added in 1929 that appears to house offices and community space, with rear wings along Ke’eaumoku Street featuring concrete exteriors and low-slope roofs being added in 1978 and 1992, which house additional interior space, while remaining relatively unaltered on the principal facade facing Sheridan Street. The temple was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. |
