説明 | A piece of the wrecked A6 Intruder stands vertical in the sagebrush desert. Lisa McNee, BLMPublic lands don't just protect natural resources, they also hold some of our most important history. In the Lakeview District, we have Burma Rim -- the site of two United States military plane crashes. On February 9, 1945, P38 Lightning Fighter Pilot 2nd Lt. Max P. Clark, U.S. Army Air Corps, died while on a gunnery training flight about 60 miles southeast of Bend, OR. While little debris of the crash is still visible, a plaque marks where the plane went down. It remains there today in honor of the pilot.Only a half-mile from the P38 crash site is the wreckage of an A6 Intruder. On September 19, 1973, Pilot Lt. Allan G. Koehler and Navigator Lt. Commander Philip D. duHamel were killed during a low-level night training mission. The debris from the crash remains as a tribute to the soldiers. The plane crash is spread over a mile across the high desert, including the tail and the cockpit. |
