説明 | Constructed sometime between 1865 and 1869, Lighthouse Point Battery formed part of the formidable defences across the Bristol Channel. Built to protect Cardiff, Newport and Bristol ports from French naval attack, the four forts at Brean Down, Steep Holm, Flat Holm and Lavernock would have provided a real challenge to seaborne attack. There were a total of nine 7-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) Mk. III guns on Flat Holm, all utilising the newly introduced Moncrieff disappearing carriage. Lighthouse Point battery has three enclosed emplacements sitting within the large defensible ditch that protects the battery and barracks. One emplacement sits in front of the lighthouse, and two to the west. As with the islands' other batteries, Lighthouse has a buried magazine for shells and cartridges. The two westerly emplacements lie within an unmanaged area of the island, and as such are overgrown and a large colony of Guls have nested in the area. As with the other emplacements on the Island, the 7-inch RML guns have been removed from the Moncrieff pits and lie in varying states of decay. Rearmament of the Island during the Second World War led to some minor modifications to the battery (although it wasn't itself rearmed). Inside the two western emplacements small Nissen huts have been constructed. The ony I was able to visit appears to have housed a generator based on the concrete plinth on the floor. |
