説明 | “I couldn’t last more than six months here if they didn’t have Carnaval … .”— Conceição Damasceno In Memoriam: pin.it/WTvC47m part of the collection at www.pinterest.com/carnavalbz/sf-carnaval-san-francisco-ba...“Conceicao Damasceno taught people to find inner happiness in their own creative movement and comfort in their own bodies.” As a bookend to Carnaval on Memorial Day weekend, Damasceno founded the SF Bay Brazilian Day/Lavagem Festival, which includes a sacred ceremony during an all day fest during Labor Day weekend in Berkeley. Starting decades ago with her dance troupe Ginga Brasil she created Casa de Cultura, a performance space in West Berkeley connected to the nonprofit arts foundation called BrasArtewww.brasarte.com/Students say Damasceno's classes are about more than just how to shake it up doing the samba. At No Sweat as well as Dance Mission and Lines Dance Studio in San Francisco, she teaches that an ideal ballerina body is hardly required; it's not how you look, it's how you feel. In Brazil, she will say, people smile and dance and take pleasure in the present, even though they might be poor or have no teeth. If you're dancing properly, the rhythm and movements can take you to a place where you feel true happiness, she says —- Rona Marech Chronicle Staff Writer.
