説明Benalla. The city of around 10,000 people is sited on the banks of Broken River which is now Lake Benalla. Broken River is a tributary of the Goulburn River which it joins in Shepparton. It rises near Mansfield in the Victorian Alps. Land was first taken up here by whites in 1840 when Goomalibee leasehold run was taken out. In that same year Charles Ryan built a timber hut which he called the Black Swan Hotel at a crossing point across Broken Creek. Four years later an unofficial post service began from this spot and in 1847 a wooden bridge was built across the creek. In 1848 a small town was surveyed by the NSW government as the police barracks was based here. The town grew very slowly. Lieutenant Governor La Trobe of the Port Philip District named it Benalla after the Benalta leasehold run nearby with a slight change of spelling! In the 1850s houses, blacksmith shops, several general stores and the Benalla Hotel were built. A National School opened in 1850. In 1857 the telegraph station began operations and the Catholic school and church were built in 1858 followed by the Anglican Church in 1860 and the Presbyterian Church in 1861. A brick courthouse was built in 1864 which you can still see and a new Methodist church was erected. Benalla was proclaimed a town in 1861. Benalla’s heritage listed buildings include: the Former Lands Office (1861); the old Courthouse (1865, 1888) and the Anglican Church (1860) in Arundel Street across the Lake; the Mechanics' Institute and library (1872) in Mair Street which is now the Information Centre, the Weary Dunlop and ANZAC museum and the Ned Kelly museum and the Costume museums – one admission covers all three museums; at the end of Muir Street is a Gothic Presbyterian church(1905 replacing an 1866 church) and round the corner of Church Street in Mitchell Street is Moira House ( 1878) which is now the “Benalla Club”. Across the Lake is also the stunningly beautiful Catholic Church built in 1908. Ned Kelly was charged in the Benalla Courthouse in 1869 when aged 14 for highway robbery against a Chinese man. The charge was dismissed. He was charged in this Courthouse again in 1877 for drunkenness and assaulting a police officer. He was given a one month prison sentence.
