説明 | Meribah on the SA Victoria border near Paruna. The town was gazetted in 1914 as the Karoonda to Paringa (Renmark) railway passed through it in 1914. This was selected as a site for a town and railway as a government well there provided good quality water. The town was given a Biblical name as Meribah in the Bible Moses found good water from a spring at Meribah. Meribah is in the Hundred of McGorry. The School commenced in a small local hall in 1918 before it moved into the purpose built state school in 1926. Meribah state school closed in 1965 when students were transferred to the Brown’s Well Area School. Next to the school was a stone headmaster’s residence. The Meribah Memorial Hall opened until 1927. The town soon had a general store, the railway station and later grain silos, and a Methodist church hall. The Methodist Church hall opened in 1928 with 100 people attending the opening. It is now closed. When the Paruna Methodist Church closed in the 1960s service were transferred to the Meribah Methodist Church hall for some years. Meribah Lutheran Church was built in 1926 and is still holding services. It is now the Meribah Lutheran church and next to it is the Lutheran Sunday School which was probably the original Lutheran manse. |
