説明Coolah. This small town of 1,300 people is only 400 kms from Sydney but in another sense it is terribly isolated. It is located near the Coolah Tops National Park and the only significant town east of Coolah towards the coast is Murrurundi (population 850) in the Upper Hunter Valley. There are no roads through this rugged part of the Great Dividing Range towards the coast with Taree being on the same latitude as Coolah. Taree is about 250 kms away as the crow flies. Murrurundi is about 80 kms as the crow flies but around 180 kms by road! Coolah Tops National Park has high volcanic soil plateaus with winter snow and Snow Gums and then escarpments that plunge from the Great Dividing Range down towards the coast with incredible waterfalls and luxuriant rainforest. It provides the headwaters of Talbragar River. The Talbragar River is 280 kms long and passes through Dunedoo and near Coolah before joining the Macquarie River at Dubbo. Over this 280 kms the Talbragar descends nearly 3,000 feet or nearly 900 metres. This is very rugged country with almost no settlements. A tributary of the Talbragar River the Coolaburragundy River which flows through Coolah. To the north of Coolah are the Liverpool Ranges which have higher parts around 4,300 feet above sea level (1,300 metres.) Coolah is 270 kms by road down to Newcastle. White pastoralists moved on to these Aboriginal lands in the late 1830s. A police barracks was established at Coolah around 1842 which probably indicates that there was some conflict between the Wiradjuri people and the pastoralists. Research on black white relationships in the Coolah district is yet to be analysed and written. The word Coolah is a European Aboriginal pidgin word meaning angry. But the local Aboriginal people called this place weetalibah wallangan meaning “place where the fire left a black stump.” Apart from black white conflict it was also a region of inter-tribal conflict between the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi people. After the devastation of the first few years of European disease and conflict co-existence emerged and many Aboriginal men ended up being employed on sheep stations. But at what remuneration? Certainly some Aboriginal leaders were highly respected like King Togee who worked on the sheep station of Nevell and Vincent. A European grave was erected for him after his fatal violent clash with another Aboriginal man of a different tribe in the late 1850s .It fell into disrepair and was restored by the Coolah Shire Council in 1948. A sheep run at Coolah was named the Black Stump run and the first licensed premises were called the Black Stump Saloon. Thus Coolah, along with a number of other Australian towns, claims to be the home of the black stump! As more white settlers moved into the region a blacksmith’s was established by the pub and a postal service began in 1849. A small town emerged in the 1850s but as late as 1866 it only had 60 residents. Some of the heritage buildings in the main street, Binnia Street are: •Before the silos on the right is the Coolah Railway station platform. The railway reached here in 1910 and the last trains operated in 1982. •On left at no 80 is the wooden Gothic Presbyterian Church built 1868. In front of it a few headstones from the early cemetery remain along the fence. •Next left is the 1920 Soldiers Memorial School of Arts. An unusual building with the war memorial lists. •Next right at no 74 is the 1880 combined Police Station Courthouse. Colonial architect James Barnet designed it. It is set at an angle to the street and now other uses. One of the oldest buildings in town. •Next left at no 61 is the two storey brick Black Stump Hotel. Built 1894 as the Tattersalls Hotel with the upper floor added in 1908. Renamed the New Central Hotel 1909-25 then the Coolah Hotel 1925- 95 and now the Black Stump Hotel. It has an Edwardian style veranda. •Next left is the former Town hall now the Information Centre. Built in 1939 and was used for film nights.•Next the main shopping precinct with many Art Deco fronted stores. •Next left is the Post Office with wooden veranda and clock in small triangular entrance pediment. Built in 1882 with a 1920s veranda renovation. Quaint. •Next right is the Coolah Valley Hotel built in 1929 on a corner angled block. Unusual decorative veranda posts.•Further along Binnia at no 11 is St Andrews Anglican church. A traditional stone gothic church built in 1882 but funds were low and building started in 1875 and took 7 years to complete. •Next to it is the state school. Established in 1868. The dark brick classrooms near the street look like 1920s structures. •Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Catholic School are in Church Street. It was built in stone in 1875.
