説明 | Street-level entrance to Chicago's Millennium Station. At the southwest corner of Michigan and Randolph. Also an entrance to the Pedway. Note the Pedway sign. April 2022.Begin rant:Millennium Station is the 12th-busiest railroad station in the United States, per Wikipedia, just behind Los Angeles Union Station. Yet for visitors and non-regular users, it can be nearly impossible to figure out how to get to. This stairwell, looking like CTA subway stairs, is the main street-level entrance to Millennium Station. It blends into the Chicago streetscape, almost hiding in plain sight, yet it's the only entrance that many passengers have any hope of finding. The other entrances to the station are even more difficult to find - winding down hallways, elevators and stairs in the Prudential / Illinois Center buildings until you stumble through the right passage. Or if you want to wander in the semi-darkness of the bottom of the 2-level and 3-level street system in this area, there are a few outdoor entrances to the terminal. You can also wind through the Pedway. It's too bad that when Millennium Park was built, they couldn't figure out a way to create some sort of highly visible, attractive new entrance to the station. The station itself is now all underground because of air rights, but it should be much easier to figure out how to enter the station from up above.I wonder how many riders have missed trains at Millennium Station because they couldn't figure out how to get into the station?/rant |
