説明 | Pennington Flash – Leigh, Greater ManchesterA flash, in the sense that I am writing about, is an area where subsidence has allowed the creation of a water-filled area or lake. Flashes such as these are often associated with the extraction of salt or coal. Those around Wigan and Leigh are the legacy of coal-mining.Pennington Flash, on the outskirts of Leigh is an outstanding place for bird-watching, but also for family days-out. Close to the entrance near Leigh Fire-Station, there is a large pay-and-display car park by the lakeside and also close to a 9-hole golf-course. There are paths around the lake for walkers, passing eight bird-watching hides such as the excellent Tom Edmundson hide in the photographs. Some of the photographs are taken from the hides. There are picnic areas and toilets; in Summer there will often be an ice-cream van and a mobile café.On the far side of the lake from the car-park and picnic-area you can see the masts of the boats moored at the Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club.To the North of the lake, paths lead up to the Leeds-Liverpool canal – the towpath would take you to Leigh town-centre or to Wigan depending upon whether you walked East or West. Walk one mile West and you reach the Plank Lane lift-bridge over the canal, where at Pennington Waterside and Marina, there are moorings for canal-boats.Today’s photo-attachments show different images of the lake. Tomorrow and the following day I’ll offer shots taken from the towpath along to the Marina, which is where we’ll be on day-three. |
