説明 | Farewell to Knaresborough – A Viaduct time-lapseToday we take a final look at the railway viaduct – the reason for our visit in the first place – and watch how its appearance changes throughout the day. The photos are all named and presented in time sequence from 07:56 to 20:21. We see change telling us the time in in these shots in many ways.As day breaks, sunlight comes from the right of the photo but by 18:49 it lights the buildings from the left. At sunrise, the surface of the Nidd is untroubled and we see the arches of the bridge reflected clearly. At 12:39, as a train leaves the station, a canoe heads towards us and the reflections are blurred by the breeze rippling the surface. It’s not until 19:38, as the sun sets that the water stills and the reflections begin to clear again. At 11:02, the sky is clear, light-blue: later, by 20:10 there are pinks, reds and mauves in the blue-hour sky.Earlier, at 07:56, we see a train heading towards the station. The light is still poor enough, in aperture-mode, for my shutter speed to be only 1/10 of a second and the movement of the train to be blurred. At 12:39, the light is easily good enough to allow a speed of 1/320 of a second, so the movement of the train leaving the station is frozen. By 16:16, even at 1/50 secs we see the train clearly as it slows. Shortly after sunset, at 19:40, a light illuminates the right-hand arch and at 1/5 secs the train’s arrival is blurred again. Only 18 minutes later, at ½ of a second the lighting of the arches extends to the centre pillar and the lights of the departing train are even more blurred. When, at 20:10, the train leaves, the camera-shutter requires an exposure of 20 seconds and we see only light-trails across the viaduct, in the water below and of a car passing under the right-hand arch. At 20:21, it is fully-night and the 30 seconds shutter speed reveals all the arches to be illuminated, the water to be perfectly still and, even with an aperture of f/10 we see a reflected light-star in the water.I hope that you have enjoyed our stay in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, but it’s time to leave and, tomorrow, as I wait for a train connection at Leeds Railway station to take me on the second-leg of my journey home, I keep my camera leashed to my wrist. |
