説明 | Rushworth. Gold discovered there in 1853. Population 1,400.Rushworth is one of those gracious old goldmining towns with faded charm and great interest. Its very wide main street with a central median strip has many historic buildings. As a gold rush camp in August 1853 it was known as Nuggetty but this was soon changed by the Gold Commissioner to Rushworth. Alluvial gold was plentiful in the gullies and where needed underground shafts were sunk up to 270 metres deep. In some places gold reefs were 2.5 metres thick and provided great success for diggers. At its peak Rushworth had 26 mines operating as well as alluvial diggings and it had a population of 40,000 people, mainly men. The town was quickly surveyed in 1854 and by 1858 it comprised a police camp, a wooden courthouse, five hotels, two breweries, a school, seven large general stores, two banks and a range of other shops including, butcher, baker, blacksmith, saddler etc. All were concentrated at the southern end of High Street. When the gold petered out in the early 1870s the town began to contract and decline. But a decade later it had reinvented itself as a timber milling town. The forests around the town were felled for railway sleepers and the eucalyptus tree leaves were used for a eucalyptus distillery. In the Main Street look for the former newspaper offices (1888) near the railway line. Also look for:•Across the street the Post Office and the former Mechanics Institute building. Built in 1913 and now the local museum. •The Glasgow building was erected 1858 as a wooden general store by a Scottish trader. His son rebuilt it in 1911.•The band rotunda 1888. •The Criterion Hotel 1856 the single story part on Wigg Street. The section on High Street was built in 1883. It has been a private residence since 1952. •The Bank of Victoria. Built in 1883. Replaced a wooden bank erected 1866. •The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney 1883, their second banking building.•The Imperial Hotel partially rebuilt in 1868 after a fire. Some parts date from 1854.•Waranga Shire Hall. Architects were Vahland and Getzschmann of Bendigo. This Shire Hall was built in red brick in 1869 with additions to the west and south sides in 1883. •The Courthouse built in Italianated style in 1877. The government architect William Wardell designed the Courthouse. •St Pauls Anglican Gothic style Church 1871 and parish hall. |
