説明 | Nathalia. 1,500.This fine town with a broad treed central venue take its name from a Yorta Yorta wood meaning “place with no stones.” This 19th century town is on Broken Creek. Its public buildings include the unusual Courthouse Hotel built in 1906; the Mechanics Institute built in 1887 now the Museum down a side street; the old 1878 Post Office; the Nathalia Hotel built in 1882; the striking Art Deco style Savings Bank built in 1922; and the former Bank of Australasia built in 1889 across the Broken Creek. Another 19th century bank is now Broken Creek Emporium. From the hotel turn right down Bromely Street which becomes Church Street along the Creek to see the Methodist (1892) and nearby Catholic Churches (1862).The Anglican Church was built in 1887. Look for the statue of the Sleeper Cutter in the median strip near the Barmah Forest Heritage Centre. The Barmah Forest provided thousands of railway sleepers. The town was founded in 1880 but a Catholic Church, hotel, flourmill and sawmill had been built before then. |
