| 説明 | A trio of Type 24 bulletproof pillboxes are neatly situated in a defensive line stretching out over 1,000 yards to the west of the RIver Maine in now what is Randalstown Forest Park. They are each located exactly 250 yards from each other, providing mutual fire to each other.Pillbox 1: Shanes Park, J084888Pilbox 2: Randalstown Forest Park (North), J084884Pilbox 2: Randalstown Forest Park (South), J087880The landscape in 1940/41 would have been very different than the forest today. The trees have been planted in the last 40+ years and would not have hindered the field of fire as they do now. It is difficult to appreciate in the forest, but the boxes sit on a low ridge of land. Each pillbox retains a number of original features.The pillboxes have been constructed using red brick shuttering; walls were built with the brick and then filled with concrete. This proved quicker and more economical than casting them entirely in reinforced concrete. The lintels for the loopholes have been precast from concrete and installed during construction, and the roof has been cast in situ. To help support the roof a central brick column has been constructed; This is only present in the southern pillbox, but evidence remains in the other two.The floor has also been laid in brick over a concrete foundation plinth. All three were fitted with a steel door, although this only remains in the northern forest pillbox. Evidence on this door remains of wood in the inside, the purpose of which is unclear but if this covered the steel completely may have reduced ricocheting if incoming rounds entered the box.Evidence of sliding steel shutters on all the internal loopholes is also present in each pillbox.
