説明 | The Mitcham City Council Chambers were designed in the Art Deco style by Christopher Smith and Dean Berry. These fine Chambers were built in 1934. Mrs Penno laid the foundation stone. The cement rendered walls have fine decorative panels between the windows in a vertical panel whilst the walls have horizontal banding. The centrepiece of the decorative panels feature a giant roses, other flowers, radiating panels, zigzag shapes etc. A rounded corner chamfered doorway with curved doors to the street was the original entrance. Beside it are two excellent examples of Art Deco style exterior lamp posts and lights. As with many large Art Deco buildings the roof line is hidden behind a decorative parapet which includes round raised relief circles. The cost of the Council chambers was over £5,000. Dean Berry also designed the Art Deco Centennial Hall which was demolished in 2007. |
